Political advocacy is a profession that is mastered through experience. While there are countless resources on the legislative process, there is no manual that teaches you how to read a legislator’s body language during a hearing, identify the right moment to request a meeting with legislative staff, or transform a client’s idea into legislation that resonates with policymakers. This knowledge is passed from one generation of advocates to the next, making mentorship one of the most valuable aspects of the profession.
For those beginning a career in advocacy, the fastest path to growth is not simply reading more policy reports or researching legislative history. It is learning alongside someone who has spent years navigating the Capitol and understanding not only how the process works, but why certain approaches are more effective than others.
Strong mentorship is rarely formal. More often, it comes from observing experienced advocates in action. It is learning the informal rhythms of the Capitol, understanding who should be involved before a bill moves forward, when to begin building relationships with a new legislative office, and what it takes to become a trusted and respected voice. These lessons cannot be found in a textbook. They are gained through experience, thoughtful observation, and conversations with mentors who are willing to share their perspective.
At Political Solutions, investing in the next generation of advocates is a core part of who we are. Through our internship program, students and young professionals gain firsthand experience in the legislative process and a behind-the-scenes look at the daily work of advocacy. Interns have the opportunity to attend hearings, observe client meetings, conduct policy research, and learn directly from experienced members of our team.
